Climbing Iran
“People often ask me why I wear nail polish. When I climb, it’s all scratched off. I look at my hands and think: Oooh - I did a lot of climbing today!” Nasim, with her hot pink nail polish is a pioneer of outdoor climbing in Iran, where women are meant to train in their veils on indoor walls only, during fixed hours, and only with other women. After being a young champion in different sports from karate to kickboxing, Nasim followed the call of the mountains. She decided to go beyond the barriers imposed on women in Iran. “Gravity doesn’t ask me what my passport is. It takes you down in the same way, whether you are rich or poor, black or white, Iranian or Italian.” The film profiles an extraordinary woman determined to push the barriers opposing her passion, whether they are physical, social, psychological, geographical, or ideological. Committed to changing things little by little, Nasim brings other young women to the walls of Polekhab outside Tehran, teaching them how to climb and get independent. Nasim’s dream can become reality: to open a new route on the Alps and join the international climbing elite.
