Last fall, in conjunction with the Bally Peak Outlook Foundation, an expedition team embarked on the first phase of the “8x8000m” program to clean up the base camps of Nepal’s eight 8,000m mountains. The 47-day cleanup during the months of lockdown was led by environmental activist and mountaineer Dawa Steven Sherpa. It removed 2.2 tons of waste from the base camps of Cho Oyu (8,188m), Everest (8,848.86m), Lhotse (8,516m), and Makalu (8,485m). The Covid-19 crisis has had significant effects on Nepal, where the tourism industry supports over a million jobs. The program helped support communities of the Everest region, which were deeply impacted by the lack of tourists. Four short films document the effort, each dedicated to one 8,000m peak and focusing on a specific theme related to sustainability and local culture. A relevant personality of the Himalayan community lends their voice to every episode.
